Commission

Homeyards Botanical Gardens Gates

A commission to recreate a set of heritage gates for the friends of Homeyards Botanical Gardens in Shaldon, Devon. Built using traditional pegged mortice and tenon joints in English air-dried oak, staying true to the materials and methods of the 1920s originals.

The gates we were replacing had themselves been made in the late 1960s as copies of the original 1920s design. This commission was a third generation: the same joinery, the same timber, the same methods. During installation we met the craftsman who had built the previous set as a joiner's apprentice sixty years earlier. Read more about meeting him in the journal.
