Who We Are

Lapwing was founded by Thom O’Nions. His first career was in the art world, where he studied at Goldsmiths and worked as a curator on museum exhibitions and international projects with leading contemporary artists. That background in visual culture shaped an eye for detail and composition that now informs every piece of furniture.

In 2020 he turned from organising shows to making objects. At Rycotewood Furniture Centre in Oxford he trained in cabinetmaking and contemporary design, learning traditional joinery techniques alongside modern workshop practice. After graduation he has worked with many leading designers and makers, including pieces for John Makepeace, one of the most influential figures in British furniture.

Lapwing carries this mixture of experience forward: an understanding of art and context, combined with the discipline of skilled making.

Design Philosophy

We are a nature-first company. Based at the Sylva Wood Foundation in Oxfordshire, our focus is on using British-grown timber from sustainably managed forests. Being situated at one of the foremost research centres for sustainable forestry in the UK allows us to engage directly with the source of our materials, and this remains central to everything we do.

Our design language is simple and clear, shaped more by postwar British modernism than by rustic craft. We believe that engagement with the environment and with the sustainability of our materials is not at odds with luxury; it is essential to it. The result is beautifully made, responsibly sourced objects.

What We Do

Lapwing designs and makes bespoke furniture and homewares in British hardwoods. We build dining tables, console tables, media units, shelving, benches, and fitted storage. Oak wall mirrors and smaller home pieces sit alongside the larger work, all made in our Oxfordshire workshop.

Each commission is guided by the space it is made for and by the timber we can source responsibly. The results are contemporary in design yet rooted in place, with an emphasis on clarity and durability.

We work with households and interior designers across Oxfordshire, the Cotswolds, and London. Whether the request is for a dining table, console, mirror, or storage, the aim is consistent: sustainable British furniture, designed with care and built to last.
