Quartet Bowl
Made from a single piece of English sycamore, with lines from T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets inscribed around the outer rim in v-groove cuts. The marks are made directly into the timber, with no ink or paint, and are visible as shadow lines in raking light, almost imperceptible in others.
Sycamore is the right material for this: its grain is fine and pale, and it takes a cut edge cleanly. The bowl is finished with food-grade cutting board oil, which feeds the grain without sealing the surface. Over time, the grain warms and deepens.
A piece for the table, the shelf, or the desk, though it tends to end up as a gift.
