Copper Lamp

A copper and wood table lamp, with a hand-spun copper shade on a coopered ash base.

The ash came from managed woodland, air-dried for two years before we brought it to the workshop in Oxfordshire. When freshly cut the grain is clean and almost white, and it settles to a warm honey tone over time. The shade is hand-spun copper with a light protective wax finish. As you move around the room the surface catches light differently, and over the months the copper develops its own patina, deepening in tone. The wax slows this slightly while protecting against fingerprints.

The base is coopered from tapered ash staves using traditional barrel-making techniques. The shade sits on a simple brass fitting with twisted fabric cable and a British three-pin plug, taking a standard E27 bulb. A warm LED works best with copper.

Works well as a bedside lamp or on a side table, and suits a reading corner equally well. Copper diffuses light in a way that's softer than fabric, warmer than glass.

The ash travels from mill to workshop in one journey, measured in miles rather than continents. Made in Britain.
