Bent Wood Tray

1 / 4

Two steam-bent ash strips arc over a solid sculpted base, held in a gentle tension that keeps them in place without fastening. The form follows from the process: ash is one of the few British timbers flexible enough to take a curve like this without splitting, which is part of why it has been used for wheel rims, longboat ribs, and hurley handles for centuries.

The tray works well on a desk, sideboard, or bedside table. Three compartments: good as a valet tray for keys and coins, as a place for pens and pencils, or simply where things land at the end of the day. Each piece has its own grain and its own slight variation in the arc of the bend, because the material makes that decision, not the jig.

Available in ash, or in oak with ash dividers, both finished with hardwax oil.

Questions

Which timber option should I choose?

Ash is pale, almost white, with straight fine grain. Oak has a warmer honey colour and more visible grain. Both are finished with hardwax oil and will develop a patina over time.

How is the bending done?

The ash strips are steam-bent: heated with steam until pliable, then shaped over a form and held until set. Ash is one of the few British timbers well-suited to this technique.

Is the finish suitable for everyday use?

Yes. The hardwax oil finish is chip-resistant and handles everyday contact well. Avoid leaving wet objects sitting in the tray for extended periods.

How do I care for it?

Wipe with a barely damp cloth. Re-oil occasionally if the surface begins to look dry; a thin coat of hardwax oil will do.

What is the lead time?

Made to order. Usually two to three weeks from order to dispatch.
