Walnut Carver

This chair was designed as a nod to the bent tubular steel constructions of Marcel Breuer, reinterpreted in solid walnut with a slightly frivolous ‘whale’s tail’ back. The legs are formed from tapering strips of walnut, laminated for strength and rigidity, while two small hand-turned bog oak buttons mark the back’s fixing points.

This version is upholstered in Mourne Mist by Mourne Textiles, a wool fabric created by Gerd Hay-Edie and used by Robin Day for Hille in 1951. The fabric’s depth and colour sit well against the walnut, adding a touch of warmth and texture. Handmade in Oxfordshire, it works just as well around the table as it does on its own.
